«Ariadne» Community Home
1. The story of a name... the beginning of a story.
"Ariadne. Daughter of Minos and Pasiphaë. She fell in love with Theseus and gave him the thread with which he found his way out
of the Minotaur's labyrinth..."
The myth of Ariadne... the labyrinth of mental diseases... the vital thread of a transitional structure... the "Ariadne" Community
Home... the mythological equivalent of a therapeutic effort.
The figure Ariadne incarnates in Greek mythology reflects the objectives of the deinstitutionalisation of chronic psychiatric
patients, of their rehabilitation and re-integration into the wider community.
2. A step forward
The "Ariadne" Community Home began operating in October 2000, within the framework of the programmes implemented by the Association
for the Psychological Health of Children and Adolescents (EPSYPE) and funded by the Greek Ministry of Health, Welfare and Social
Services (ministerial decision No. Υ5b/oik. 2234/8.10.2000). It represents a long-term home, which gives the opportunity to
individuals who have been institutionalized for long periods of time in traditional settings to be re-integrated into society
and to function again within the neighbourhood and the community.
3. The residents
The "Ariadne" Community Home houses 7 residents aged between 23 and 51 years.
The residents are former long stay patients, both men and women, experiencing
mental disability problems and mild psychiatric disorders (double diagnosis).
|
4. An interdisciplinary team
The staff is composed of a variety of professionals in the field of mental health,
forming an interdisciplinary team. The home's needs and endless possibilities require the staff's presence on a 24-hour basis.
The services provided for by the interdisciplinary team include assisting the residents in their daily activities, as well as
supporting them on an individual and group basis with a view to enhancing their personal and group development and to
reestablishing their ties with their families and the community in general.
